Is AEO worth it for a small business? An honest answer
When AEO is worth it
- Your category already triggers AI answers. This is testable in ten minutes and costs nothing — see the self-check below. If assistants confidently answer "which X in Y is best" questions in your market, that conversation is happening with or without you.
- You already have something worth citing. A real website, real reviews, clear pricing or service information. AI assistants assemble answers from sources; you need to be a usable source.
- Your buyers research before contacting anyone. Higher-consideration purchases — clinics, professional services, hotels, contractors — are where a pre-purchase AI answer changes the shortlist.
- You can tolerate an unglamorous first result. The first deliverable is usually a list of unsexy fixes: crawler access, page structure, entity consistency. That is the work.
When AEO is NOT worth it — and what to do instead
- No working website. Fix that first. There is nothing for an assistant to cite.
- You compete only on being cheapest. Price-only businesses rarely win recommendation questions; assistants tend to describe rather than rank on price. Spend on the channel that converts price shoppers instead.
- Nobody asks AI about your category yet. Run the self-check. If assistants refuse or give vague non-answers for your buying questions, you are early — re-check in a few months.
- Your immediate problem is volume, not visibility. If you need enquiries next week, paid search does that. AEO is a slower, compounding play and we will say so.
- You want a guarantee. Nobody can honestly give you one. If a guarantee is what makes the purchase feel safe, this is not the right purchase.
A 10-minute self-check before you spend anything
- Write down the three or four questions a customer actually asks before choosing someone in your category.
- Ask each one in a logged-out ChatGPT session, and again in Google. Note whether any business is named — and whether it is you.
- Repeat each question two or three times. Answers vary between runs; a single run tells you very little.
- Open
yourdomain.com/robots.txtand search forGPTBot,ClaudeBot,PerplexityBotandGoogle-Extended. If any are disallowed, those systems cannot quote you at all. - Decide from what you saw — not from what anyone told you.
If step 4 finds a block, fixing it is a one-line change and it is the single highest-certainty action in this entire field, because the AI vendors document that behaviour themselves.
What the evidence actually supports — and what it doesn't
The only peer-reviewed causal study in this field (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, arXiv 2311.09735, ACM SIGKDD 2024) tested content changes — adding citations, statistics and authoritative quotes — and measured visibility gains of up to roughly 40%, under benchmark conditions rather than on live engines.
Against that, a July 2026 survey of 45 studies (arXiv 2607.14035) found no technique with a stable, reproducible effect across platforms, and noted that some rewrites actually reduced retrieval.
So the honest position is narrow: the structural work is research-grounded and cheap to do well, the mechanical work (crawler access) is documented by the vendors, and everything beyond that is measured, not promised. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed percentage lift is quoting a number that does not exist.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO worth it for a small business?
It depends on one thing: whether your buyers are already asking AI assistants about your category. If they are and your name never comes up, a bounded audit is a reasonable spend. If you have no working website, no reviews, and compete only on price, fix those first — AEO cannot make an AI recommend a business that has nothing to recommend.
How do I check whether AI already mentions my business — for free?
Open a logged-out ChatGPT session and Google, ask the three or four questions your customers actually ask before buying, and note whether your name appears and whose does. Repeat it a few times, because answers vary between runs. That costs nothing and tells you more than any vendor pitch.
Is SEO dead?
No, and we would not trust anyone selling AEO who tells you it is. The two share the same foundations — a crawlable site, clear structure, credible content — and AI assistants retrieve from indexed web pages. What has changed is that some questions now get answered without a click, so ranking alone no longer describes your visibility.
Should I do AEO or SEO first?
In practice they are the same first move: make the site crawlable, clearly structured and factually solid. The divergence is in measurement and in content shape — AEO cares about whether a passage can be lifted and credited, SEO cares about position and clicks. If your site is weak on fundamentals, that work serves both.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No. AI answers are generated fresh each time and no provider decides which sources a model picks. Any guarantee is a promise about someone else's system. What is promisable is measurement, crawler access, structural changes the research associates with being quoted, and a dated report.
How long before AEO shows results?
We do not have a trustworthy figure for this and will not invent one. What we do instead is measure a baseline before any work starts and repeat the same measurement monthly, so you see direction from your own data rather than from a promise.
What does it cost?
Our one-off AI Visibility Audit is THB 25,000 (about USD 850 at roughly 33 THB/USD, as of August 2026), delivered in 7 business days from complete intake. Monthly programmes start at THB 9,000. Every price is published on the pricing page.
What if the honest answer is that I should not buy anything yet?
Then we will say so. The free snapshot exists partly for that reason — if it shows your category barely triggers AI answers, or that your fundamentals need work first, spending on AEO now would be premature.
Find out before you decide
Send your website and your category to hello@desklinemedia.com.
